a place to put random discourses on life
So HW convinced me (without too much effort) to go get the newest Harry Potter Book at midnight. Only one place in town was doing the midnight party, so we headed over to Hastings. (HW abhors Walmart, so this was the only options)

We showed up at midnight, not realizing some people had waited since 9:30! Dharma wasn't the only one witnessing stupidity and greediness over a book. There were 2 lines, one for prepaid and one for shlubs like us who just decided to get up at midnight and grab a book.

Our line was moving faster. The crankiness of individuals in line seemed to be directly related to the amount of time since they pre-paid. I chit-chatted with some people and we all had come on a whim. Our attitude was laid back and for the most part, patient. Those who pre-paid, got dressed up in elaborate costumes and stood in line for 3 hours...seemed less inclined to enjoy the event. Free cake at least.

My thought.....we waited about 40 minutes because we didnt' show up till midnight. The people who stood in line for 3 hours.....onlly got a book about 10 minutes before we did. Was it worth it?

My favorite part: The family who dressed all the kids up as house-elves! HA! At least they were honest parents!

BTW: I had to go to bed after only an hour because I worked Sat morning....so I didn't finish till 2 pm that day. The moment I finished the last page, I realized I made a HUGE mistake. Now I have to wait another 2 years to find out what happens next! (I do this every time. sIgh) I know that not everyone reads as fast as me so I'll wait a few days to put my thoughts up here....but check back because I would like to know what you thought!

*AHEM* Spoilers for those of you who haven't finished it. Ye be warned.

I know who R.A.B. is. S/he's mentioned in this book and a previous book. Anyone else know?

I also made a huge mistake in where I thought she was taking the book--but I am (currently) right about Snape--I thought he was evil! Though I do find it interesting that while he and Harry were dueling, he didn't try to kill Harry, and he was actually telling Harry to use his mind instead of saying his spells aloud.

-A., who also pre-ordered her book and was pretty dammity mad when they handed them out alphabetically, seeing as how A. isn't really the first letter of my surname--quite opposite, in fact. Grr. Heh. I'm a nerd.

Guffaw!  I went to CVS today to pick up a perscription, and what was sitting on the checkout counter?  Uh, huh!  And there was no line!  Hehehehehehe

But I am like you except with Tom Clancy Novels.  I  grab them up and scarf them down and then have to wait a year or more for the next one!  Ya think we would learn by now.  NOT!

As for Harry Potter, I will wait for the movie!

I got it at Kroger Sat morning. Like Dr Guy, I was picking up a prescription anyway. My hubby finished and I am now on about chapter 5 so I skipped by any spoiler alerts. I always thought the people who waited in lines at midnight are in it for the socializing like the Star Wars freaks who started waiting in line at 6:00 for the midnight showing of any of those movies.

Yep! They are the gossips of the genre! Why else be out that late? That is very astute of you!

Hey, in my defence, we didn't PLAN to stand in line and be HP geeks. We were up and it sounded like fun. And I could have waited till later and picked it up, but then what would have been the fun in that?

Please feel free to spoil anything and everything. If you know who RAB is, please feel free to share. I don't feel like rereading the books to find out!

So are you saying you devoured a 672-page book within 14 hours of purchasing it? Now I know why your son idolizes superheroes...it must be in the genes.

That book would take me months to get through. I certainly wouldn't want to spend several months of my life reading something so trite. A few hours though? Sure! You're so lucky that you can do that!

RAB: Regulus Black? He seems the most obvious choice since he was "casually" mentioned twice in the book. However, Amelia Bones has the middle two initials, so it could be her if she has another first name....

I know what you mean about not rereading. Until these books, I was not a rereader. Now, sadly, I can admit that I've read the HP books about, uh, 15 times. Usually when there's a trip or if I have to be around my in-laws (who don't like HP so much, heh heh). But only 1 time through the latest.

-A, a certifiable HP nerd.

you underestimate the addictive power of hp, you start reading it, and tell yourself every time that you're going to read it s-l-o-w-l-y but somehow get hooked anyway and wind up finishing the whole thing before you've even got properly started!
