The continuing adventures of hyperboy and his mom
Sometimes you suddenly realize just how much your children have grown. Sometimes it is the big events like starting school or graduating that stand out; other times it's the little details.
HW's unit rented out a waterpark for the welcome home celebration yesterday. My son, who just turned 3 a few weeks ago was excited but a little aprehensive at the sight of the waterslides. He thought everything was amazing and cool, but he wasn't sure about actually going down the slide....until we went on it the first time. After that, he wasn't interested in food....even the cake! As we climbed the stairs for the fifth time, he bombarded me with questions. "Mom, mom, can we go whoooosh again?" "Mom, mom, can I say Whee!?" " Can I yell 'Waaaa Hoo!'?" "Are we going high?" His language skills are so well developed that it sometimes surprises me to hear him at full speed. One more sign that he isn't my baby anymore.
I always loved hanging out with my son, watching him discover new things and see his reaction to the world around him. But now, he is interacting more and participating. I love it. Mostly because I'm the active kind of mom-one who will go climb on the moneky bars and play tag in the backyard. We found a little frog hopping around the park and I caught it for him. we watched it hop around and showed it to HW. Connor was so cute....talking to the frog, watching it hop around and then setting it free. The whole time he was very careful with it, touching it carefully (maybe a little rough-but as gentle as he possibly could) I love knowing that his boundless energy is the fun, imaginative kind....not the destructive type. I don't have to chase after him to tell him not to hurt or break things, just to keep up with him as new adventures unfold.
Several weeks ago we bought him Spiderman pjs. We have been waiting for a night like this. One where he wore himself out so much that he won't realize that we are putting new jammies on him in the middle of the night. He woke up and ddint' realize at first that he has a "web/cape" on or a big spiderman on his shirt. But the look on his face was priceless. The joy when he discoverd that he was Spiderman was perfect. He had to run through the house at top speed to find his dad so he could show off. The best part is when he tries to shoot a web. He has to stop what he is doing and very carefully arrange his index and pinky fingers before he can wave his arm around and add the sound effects. That small lack of motor control reminds me that even though he is growing up....he's still my little boy.
