a place to put random discourses on life
WHAT THE *&%($@&%????? I was following up on a friend's blog this morning and when I saw what she posted I just about lost it. She cut and pasted a clip from Democracynow. (see below)

NSA: “No Attack Happened” in Gulf of Tonkin
Newly declassified documents have provided more evidence the Johnson administration faked the Gulf of Tonkin incident to escalate the Vietnam War.
The alleged 1964 attack on U.S. warships by North Vietnamese was used as a pretext to increase bombing and troop deployments in Vietnam. But a
report from the National Security Agency concludes: “no attack happened that night.”

What?!? So, naturally, being the curious sort that I am, I decided to head over and read the rest of the article.....right? WRONG! That was it. No supporting documents or details, just an inflammatory comment.

She paired up the original "story" with this gem.

Bush Warns Iran on Naval Dispute
Meanwhile President Bush also continued to criticize Iran for a naval confrontation between Iranian and U.S. boats this week.
President Bush: “Our ships were moving along very peacefully off the Iranian border, in territorial waters–international waters, and Iranian boats came out
and were very provocative. And it was a dangerous gesture on their part. We have made it clear, publicly, and they know our position–and that is there will
be serious consequences if they attack our ships, pure and simple."

Iran has accused the U.S. of faking video footage showing Iranian speedboats approaching the U.S. warships.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

*Breathe......Breathe.....*

I honestly have to say that I would welcome opposing viewpoints and even read their stuff more often if THEY ACTUALLY WROTE AN ARTICLE....complete with facts and details and actual information....not just a quote and then a unverified, undocumented comment. Flaming is great on Joe if you want a bbq (and to get the boot) but come on, can't they at least to pretend to be more than a taunting 4th grader?

And the fact that a woman that I know is intelligent, can be so stupid as to blindly copy and post information with no supporting documentation.....drives me crazy. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't blindly spout rhetoric and be a sheep. Just shut up and listen quietly until you DO have a clue!

Last night I heard argument that this may have been faked because the voice on the radio may not have come from the boats. I guess no one has heard of sitting on a beach and being able to command naval vassals to attack some place. They want to compare the two incidents but have forgotten about the Cole. The attack on the Cole was carried out by a similar craft as the ones the Iranians used. My source for this info is fox news.

Although all news media seems to be slanted left or right. Fox seems to be slanted a lot less right than the main stream media is slanted left.

Hate and intelligence seem to be mutually exclusive of late.  But then sheep are easily led no matter how intelligent they are.

But I dont think it is intelligence really.  Articulate, yes.  Articulate people appear intelligent, but they are not by definition.

Hate is the one thing I can do without. Some people thrive on it, but I can live without it.

Yeah, I've read and heard this accusation a lot lately.  What is the source?  The Iranians.  That doesn't mean it's automatically a lie, but it does make it sound like the accusation is merely phase II of the propaganda operation.

I love that fact that with all the technology we have now a days, with all the special effects and sounds we have in movies today that make mythical creatures look real and make Superman look like he is really flying, yet somehow the Gov't of the US makes a fake video so badly that everyone aw right through it? Now this is comedy, why would the US put out a fake video that would look fake? Can anyone explain to me how the Gov't can be that stupid that they would provide a video that can be proven to be fake? Either this is nothing but an Iranian and Democratic propaganda BS or we have the dumbest people working in all branches of our Gov't. Idiocracy got here 500 years early than the movie shows apparently. For anyone to swallow the idea that the US would purposely make a video that looks fake and then put it out there hoping no one will notice needs to take the next ship off this planet cause they may as well join their minds on another planet.

Why? You're defending it. I'm pretty sure that at this point the US government could still release almost anything and have defenders among the public regardless of how fake it looked.

How long that ability to sow confusion will continue before everyone questions everything released (as in Hong Kong) is more difficult to determine. But if I was working for the US government's PR wing I'd be reasonably confident we could get very short-term gain from a faked announcement. It'd certainly come back to bite over the next few weeks/months, but that may not be an issue depending on what you hope to gain.

If war with Iran was desired, faking a series of confrontations would be a good way to build it up, just so long as you can keep them under wraps until after war is declared. Seems a little overly complex though and that's why I doubt the video is fake.

It's that freakin' idjit, Dubya, cookin' up schemes to start another war. He ordered the Navy to fake up some boats looking like an attack...hardest part was erasin' the water skiers.

That may be true, but explain why anyone would be dumb enough to make something that would look fake right off the back? If you are looking for for an excuse to start another war and you come up with the idea of making a fake video, you wouldn't make something that looks fake right from the get go.

Come on cacto, even you have to admit that a lie has to sound real for a while before someone figures it out. While the US may not make something that could rival "Under Siege" or "Pearl Harbor", I seriously doubt they would make a video that could also have been used as part of a comedy section of The Late Show.

You will never convince the loony left, they believe the U.S. is at fault for everything.

I don't think we've seen a PR specialist as good as Goebbels - I don't think we've seen one who had to be as good - and he was the one who said, "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." So no, I don't think it has to sound all that real, you just to force people to think about it regularly enough that they start to believe there must be some truth to it.

If you are looking for for an excuse to start another war and you come up with the idea of making a fake video, you wouldn't make something that looks fake right from the get go.

Of course not, which is why I'm inclined to think it's probably legit. But I would try and make it amateur. Without a decent director that may slip towards absurd or it may turn out well, but it would be harder to pass off a professional looking video as legit than a Late Show-quality one.

I'm pretty sure the Iranian special guards riding giant turtles were hard to edit in too. They do add that touch of authenticity though...

Because they know that reality is unrealistic?
