a place to put random discourses on life
I am sick of it.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a free place to host a website? I'm sick of Geocities because the site crashes whenever too many people visit.

I wouldn't mind paying for a place, but I hate to put out a bunch of money and effort to discover.....that it sucks.

Any suggestions?

first you need to buy a domain name. you can do that for less than $10.00 at godaddy.com as well as a number of other places (godaddy is the first one that came to mind).

then you need a host (where your site files will actually be stored). i've heard a lotta not-so-good stuff about godaddy as a domain host. i use several. of those, the least expensive is avid (about $6 a month prepaid for a year). the only problem ive had with them has been one time when they accidentally blocked one of four different sites for who knows what reason. i emailed them about it and it was unblocked 15 minutes later. basically no hassles setting up, they provide you with a mysql db, lotsa email accts and apps to upload and edit your site (i prefer using my ftp app).

here's a link to avid Link

I've had a site on Tripod http://www.tripod.lycos.com/ for about 6 years now with no troubles whatsoever and I pay $5.95 a month for 50megs of space.

I use 1portfolio myself http://hosting.1portfolio.com/ and so far they have been very good.
Lowest plan is $0.99 a month or $7.99 a year for 250 megs of space and 5 gigs bandwidth.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at a few places to host my site, but the bandwidth was really low or the total space was low or ......the most frustrating.....obnoxious ads and slow uploads.

If anyone else wants to chime in, I haven't decided yet so give me the dirt!

Well, how much bandwidth are you looking for? I think thats a decent amount with 1portfolio.

My husband has our family page up for absolutely free. Yep, we don't pay a dime. All it requires is Windows XP (which of course cost an arm & a leg), but all my friends who have it were surprised when I told them that XP provides a way to have a free web site. To publish our site my husband went to homeip.net where we created our own domain name. I threw together our stuff using frontpage (beyond that I know nothing about web design...I've never even tried GeoCities), et voila! We have a cheesy, family web site....but it's FREEEEEEEEEEEE!

Good luck to you whatever you try
